Hyaluronic Acid Injections

restore lost volume WITH HYALURONIC ACID DERMAL FILLERS

What are Hyaluronic Acid Injections?

Dermal Fillers are used to restore lost volume due to aging, provide a more youthful appearance, and prevent skin laxity. Made of hyaluronic acid (HA), injectable filler is the best way to restore volume and enhance your beauty. Lip enhancements are the most common services, along with chin elongation, cheek contouring, and jaw structuring. Under eye hollowness can also be reduced with dermal fillers. Because HA is a naturally occurring molecule, our body produces an enzyme called hyaluronidase that naturally breaks down hyaluronic acid overtime and continues to break it down further as we age.

How They Work

Dermal filler is the manufactured gel version of hyaluronic acid (HA).

Because this is an external substance, our natural hyaluronidase enzyme supply takes months to break down the filler. Dependent on your anatomy, placement of filler, filler product, and injection technique, your body will take between 6-18 months to break down filler. This makes dermal filler the perfect way to enhance your features without having to worry about too much maintenance.

Treatment Areas

Most areas on the face can be treated at plumpitupp! Below are some common treatment areas and their results:

  • Under Eye Rejuvenation - for under eye hollowness and slight pigmentation, filler works to add volume to this area and give a less ‘tired’ look.

  • Cheek Contouring - to create the perfect angles and place for highlight. Also helps with volume restoration.

  • Smile Line Filler - to smooth out the lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth.

  • Jawline Contouring - to give the most contoured look and create more shape to the face.

  • Chin Enhancement - for the perfect slimming look and side profile.

  • Lip Filler - the perfect pout has balanced lips, volume, shape, and definition.

  • Other areas include: neck lines, ear lobes, and hands.

Lip Fillers

Determining how much dermal filler is required for your unique lips is dependent on your natural anatomy and desired goals. For virgin lips (first time lip filler clients), Nurse Reeya usually recommends using one syringe to begin. This is because there is a lot of empty space in the lips to be filled with filler and in order to create better shape, definition, and symmetry, one syringe (1 mL) is needed. In some instances, Nurse Reeya will use a half syringe (0.5mL) on virgin lips. In this scenario, the client likely has thinner lips with less space for the dermal filler product. Overfilling thin/small lips can result in undesirable outcomes such as bumpy filler, uneven lips, and migrated filler in a short period of time. It’s really important to have your lip anatomy assessed by a professional before deciding which route is best for you.

If you are hoping to build your lips to a large, plump size, you will likely require multiple treatments of one syringe each time and frequently. This means that you could receive one syringe of dermal filler every 1 to 3 months until you’ve reached your desired outcome. For those who are looking to keep their lips very natural and only wish to have slight plump, it is best to receive lip fillers at longer intervals such as every 5 to 12 months. Make sure to create your perfectly individualized lip filler plan with your nurse injector.

Candidacy, Safety & Side Effects

The perfect dermal filler candidate is someone who desires immediate improved facial appearance without having to undergo surgery. There are many concerns that can be addressed in a dermal filler appointment such as mid face volume loss, full facial contouring, enhanced cheek bones, under eye hollowness, and smile lines. Older clientele may wish to restore volume they once saw in their youth, while younger clientele usually desire angular results.

Safety is the most important factor at plumpitupp. Although most clients are dermal filler candidates, it is important to not receive lip injections if you:

  • Are currently treating an active infection with antibiotics.

  • Are allergic to gram-positive bacterial proteins that are used to make the hyaluronic acid (HA) or mannitol.

  • Are allergic to the numbing agent lidocaine (aka lignocaine and xylocaine) or benzocaine.

  • Are prone to bleeding or have a bleeding disorder.

  • Have an active skin lesion in or around your lips.

  • Are currently pregnant or breast feeding.

Please refrain from booking a dermal filler appointment if you have any of the above.

Results, Longevity & Maintenance

Dermal filler is best maintained in a healthy and well hydrated individual. Regularly drinking water and avoiding long term compression on your face will help keep the filler intact. Avoid sleeping on one side to maintain the intended structure of your dermal filler. Follow up dermal filler appointments are advised within the 6-9 month mark for most clients.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) lip filler injections are meant to last 6-9 months. However, due to everyone’s individual anatomy, some clients find themselves returning up to 18 months after their initial injection to receive another treatment.

Prep & Appointment Expectations

Before your appointment, there are a few things you can do:

  • Arrive without makeup - we are better able to assess your natural facial anatomy and this lowers your risk of infection.

  • Avoid blood thinning products such as Aspirin, Advil, alcohol, and smoking (marijuana & tobacco).

  • Eat before arriving to ensure you have lots of energy!

  • Bring along a clean (never used) mask to use after your appointment.

At your appointment, Nurse Reeya will go over your natural anatomy and desired goals. She will explain the entire treatment to you. This includes product choice, your goals, method of injection, potential side effects, and aftercare. You can expect to have your picture taken to upload into your medical chart. You will be asked to disclose your medical history, current medications, and allergies. You may be numbed with a medical grade numbing cream, exclusive to plumpitupp. After your dermal filler treatment is complete, you will have your pictures taken and reminded of your after care. Your total time at the clinic will vary from 30-90 minutes.

Aftercare

To ensure the best results for your dermal filler treatment, follow these after care instructions:

  • Do not smoke, consume alcohol, ASA, Advil, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, or blood thinning medication for 24h post injection time. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is acceptable.

  • Avoid using makeup products for 24h post injection time to minimize risk of infection.

  • Do not exercise vigorously for 24 hours post injection time.

  • Do not use straws, perform oral sex, smoke/vape, or engage in long term compression against lip filler for 14 days

  • Swelling, bruising, and mild soreness are a normal reaction to dermal filler injections. Ice the area intermittently & apply Arnica cream.

  • Sleep on your back as much as possible for at least 14 days post dermal filler injections.

Pain, Healing & Downtime

With plumpitupp’s medical grade numbing cream, most clients feel minimal discomfort! The numbing cream is applied prior to the treatment, which allows the product to work its magic in under 10 minutes. As well, our Stylage® HA dermal filler contains lidocaine for additional numbing as the treatment occurs.

Depending on the area of the face treated, you may experience some swelling. Anticipate the majority of your swelling to last for up to 7 days after your injectable treatment. You should also expect some bruising, redness, and mild tenderness following the treatment. After 24 hours you are able to return to most activities, however full results will be seen in 14 days.

  • There are a few reasons an individual may want to remove their dermal filler - this is possible with the dissolving enzyme, Hyaluronidase. Although uncommon, if dissolving is necessary, Hyaluronidase is injected into the area treated to completely or partially remove the hyaluronic acid dermal filler. The results are immediate, and healing is complete within 72 hours of treatment.

Issues that can be addressed with Hyaluronidase:

    • Lumpy or uneven lip filler.

    • Migrated filler beyond the intended area.

    • Prolonged or excessive inflammation.

    • Lips or areas that appear overfilled.

    • Infection or allergic reaction within the treatment area.
